Delhi’s First Barrier-Less Toll Plaza: How Multi-Lane Free Flow Works

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has inaugurated Delhi’s first barrier-less toll plaza on the Urban Extension Road-II corridor. Located at Mundka-Bakkarwala, the new setup becomes the second barrier-less toll system in the country after Gujarat, marking a major shift in the way toll collection is carried out on Indian highways.

What is MLFF Technology?

The new tolling setup uses Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) technology, which allows vehicles to cross toll points without stopping. Unlike conventional toll plazas that use boom barriers and dedicated lanes, the MLFF system works through:

  • Overhead gantries fitted with cameras and sensors
  • Automatic vehicle detection
  • Digital toll collection
  • Continuous vehicle movement

How It Works

The system identifies vehicles in real-time using:

  1. Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras - Captures vehicle number plates
  2. Vehicle classification sensors - Determines vehicle type based on axle count and dimensions
  3. Unique tracking ID generation - Creates identification for each passage

As a vehicle passes under the tolling structure, the system links the toll amount to the vehicle’s FASTag account.

Benefits of Barrier-Less Tolling

AdvantageImpact
No CongestionVehicles don’t need to slow down
Reduced Fuel WastageNo idling or stop-start movement
Faster TravelImproved traffic flow
24/7 OperationNo human intervention needed
Reduced PollutionLess vehicle idling

Important Rules to Follow

Motorists must ensure their FASTag remains active and properly funded to avoid penalties. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has set clear guidelines:

Payment Timeline

TimeframeAction RequiredPenalty
Within 72 hoursClear pending tollNormal amount only
After 72 hoursClear pending tollDouble toll amount

NHAI Advisory for Vehicle Owners

To avoid penalties, NHAI has advised vehicle owners to:

  1. Maintain sufficient FASTag balance at all times
  2. Keep FASTag active
  3. Ensure vehicle is fitted with High Security Registration Plate (HSRP)
  4. Regularly check notifications linked to registered mobile numbers
  5. Clear any pending toll alerts promptly

How to Check Your FASTag Balance

You can check and recharge your FASTag through:

  • Bank mobile apps
  • NHAI’s official website
  • Partner payment platforms
  • Physical recharge points at fuel stations

The Future of Tolling in India

This pilot project in Delhi is expected to pave the way for similar installations across the country. The government aims to modernize highway infrastructure and reduce travel time significantly.

Key Takeaways:

  • Delhi’s first barrier-less toll plaza opens at Mundka-Bakkarwala
  • MLFF technology allows vehicles to cross without stopping
  • 72-hour window to pay toll before penalties apply
  • Double penalty for delayed payments
  • Ensure FASTag is active and sufficiently funded
